A new way to shop and support Women-Led businesses

Black Friday originally kicked the door open to the holiday shopping frenzy. Then came Small Business Saturday, Giving Tuesday, and Cyber Monday. What about a day focused on supporting Women-Led businesses? That’s what outerwear brand Wild Rye founder Cassie Abel and her team are making happen. Established in 2018, Women-Led Wednesday’s (WLW) mission is to champion Women-Owned and -Led brands–shining a spotlight on these businesses every year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

The challenge was that the WLW brand, website, and social media were created and managed by a group of powerful, but busy women as a side hustle. Over time, they started to feel like the visual impact of what they created wasn’t effectively communicating the urgency behind the movement. Catalysis (collectively) raised our hands to help.

Before jumping in, our team conducted an audit of the WLW website to first help articulate WLW’s core values. We honed over fifty words down to four brand values we thought best represented the initiative: Transformative, Discovery, Purposeful, and Accomplished. We used mood-boards to bring these values to life, including mantras and photography samples to help guide how these values could translate into a unique visual identity and voice.

From there, our team provided the design and copywriting resources to build the new brand guide. The contents included everything from the core values to brand voice, typography, a color system, logotype, a brand seal, iconography, image treatments, sample brand extensions for relevant channels (like social), and photography guidelines. The WLW vibe and mission now felt exciting and fresh while being supportive and real. We leveraged the brand toolkit to redesign elements of their website so the WLW team could reach out to brand partners and media with confidence in a mission they believed in. Our website efforts included updates to the navigation, page layouts and the WLW business directory - making it easier for users to find what they were looking for, while making WLWs partner businesses more discoverable.

If you know of any Women-Led brands or want to support the cause, check out Women-Led Wednesday and tell ‘em we sent you. The new site will be ready soon, but the more people we can get excited about what they’re doing now, the more impact we can make for Women-Owned businesses in 2024.
